Hello, friends! During our autumn trip we lived at the Gorki Gorod resort. The time has come to tell you how the level of 540 meters differs from 960 and where it is better to book accommodation.
Before the trip, I specifically consulted with experienced travelers so as not to miss. Still, there were 6 of us on the trip, including our four-month-old baby. Now I have my own opinion :)
Gorki Gorod is the first resort on the route from Sochi. This is an impressive complex with an infrastructure of hotels, apartments, cafes, a cable car, shops and equipment rentals. During the Olympics, journalists covering the sporting event lived in Gorki Gorod.
I am attaching a schematic map of the resort.
The lower level of the resort is at 540 m, and the upper is at 960 m. In fact, there are still 1500 and 2200 meters, but these are observation decks with a cafe, so we will only consider 540 and 960.

Gorki City 540 meters
The first thing you notice in Gorki Gorod is the architecture of the resort. The project was developed by two architects - Mikhail Filippov (540m) and Mikhail Atayants (960m) with the participation of the Frenchman Pierre Diener, who had a hand in Courchevel. The architects drew their creative ideas from the Middle Ages and wanted to create a city of that time.
The central square, where the cable car station is located, has a semicircular shape and is very similar to an amphitheater, with views of the mountains and the Mzymta River. The residential part is isolated from the highway, which is very convenient for pedestrians.
The main promenade of the town is a favorite place for an evening walk. On the left is the Gorki Mall shopping center, on the right are the apartments. On the ground floor there are shops and cafes. In front of the shopping center there is a small market where there is a brisk trade in various tourist goods.
In the evening, while walking, we reached the casino, but did not go inside. Just gawked. Somehow I didn’t think through the “tuxedo and bow tie” option).
And this is Masha and I showing off on our morning walk. It's surprising how few mothers use a sling. Basically, everyone hangs out with strollers.
The main advantage of GG 540 m, in my opinion, is the presence of a large shopping center with Perekrestok, a cinema and a bowling alley. Since the lower level of the resort is dominated by housing in the form, the issue of purchasing groceries is especially relevant. Well, the lower level itself is larger and more ambitious.
This is the view of the Mzymta embankment from the cable car. Surprisingly, this part of GG 540 is the least crowded. The main crowd is near the shopping center.
There are only two hotels in GG 540 - Gorki Plaza 4* and Marriott Krasnaya Polyana 5*. It's great to live at the Marriott in the summer, they have an outdoor pool. I read that guests of Gorka Gorod can use the swimming pool for a fee, but I haven’t personally checked this possibility.
Right behind us is the Mountain Carousel cable car. Gorki City 960 meters is not even visible from this point.
Where to eat in Gorki Gorod 540m?
You can have a relatively inexpensive meal in Gorki Gorod 540 in the Pechka and Ugli cafe. These are a la luxury dining rooms. Salads for 70-80 rubles, soup - 150 rubles, second course - 150 rubles. The average bill is 250-300 rubles per person. In Pechka, Russian cuisine predominates, and in Ugli there is a menu with a Caucasian twist.
Harats Pub serves a pretty good business lunch from 12.00 to 17.00. For 270 rubles you can choose two dishes (soup, main course or salad). There are three types of each dish on the menu, so you won’t get bored quickly. Breakfast in Haratsa from 8.00 to 11.00 (230 RUR). The price tag is very similar to Pechka, but at least there is service.
The Verona restaurant offers breakfast for 150 rubles, and there is a children's menu. In general, I recommend going to cafes/restaurants and looking at special offers. They probably change from season to season. I can say for sure that almost every cafe offers something as a bonus - a bun with coffee, beer with the main course, etc.
We mainly ate at Harats Pub and at home. We bought products at Perekrestok and Agrokompleks (the store is located opposite the shopping center). Both there are ready-made dishes, so you don’t have to bother with cooking. You can simply heat up the food and make a salad.
Gorki City 960 meters
The Upper Town has a completely different mood. The architecture follows the lines of antiquity, the buildings look more respectable, and the town itself is much smaller in area.

During our walk it was quite deserted. But what views! Guests of GG 960 can relax on a sun lounger and gaze out at the mountains.
By the way, no one will check the key card, so anyone can privatize a sun lounger and relax.
At the level of 960 m the cable car bifurcates. One branch leads up to the Black Pyramid peak, and the second to the Polikarya waterfall. You can go above 960 meters only by paying for a ski pass.
A cable car connects the levels. Using your room key card, you can travel there and back as many times as you like for free. There is also an asphalt road at 960m, and in the evening late guests are picked up by a bus. If you do not live in Gorki Gorod, then you can go upstairs only for a fee. Please note that when you check in at level 960m, you can take the cable car for free without a key card if you present your security voucher for accommodation.
There are already many more hotels and fewer apartments in GG 960. Hotels at 960 m level: Gorki Hotel 5*, Gorki Hotel Suites 5*, Dolina 960 4*, Rixos Krasnaya Polyana 5*, Gorki Panorama 4* (excellent hotel with a swimming pool), Gorki Grand 3*, Gorki Art (nice hotel with an unusual interior). As you can see, luxury housing predominates on the upper level of Gorki Gorod.
So, which is better - Gorki Gorod 540 or 960?
Let's look point by point:
- If you want action, nightlife, festivities, noisy gatherings in cafes - choose GG 540m. Well, or you can live in GG 960 and have a blast on the lower level. Then you need to think about options for a late return to the hotel in advance. The cable car does not operate at night.
- If you like a relaxing holiday, you want silence, nature and the purest mountain air, then GG 960m awaits you.
- If you come to Gorki Gorod with children, I recommend the lower level. There is a great children's playground, a shopping center with a play area and many more food options.
- If you choose a more economical accommodation option for yourself, then this is definitely GG 540m.
- Gorki Gorod 540 or 960 can be chosen solely because of the hotel. For example, you definitely need a spa complex. Then this is the Gorki Panorama Hotel. Do you want to while away your time by the outdoor pool in the summer? Then choose Marriott at 540m level.
- If you plan to spend time actively and explore other resorts besides Gorka Gorod, then it is more convenient to rent housing at the level of 540m. The highway passes below. This is where taxi drivers hang out and public transport runs. Of course, you can always take the cable car down or call a taxi, but it will take a little longer and a little more expensive.

Everyone has heard about Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, and about Rosa Khutor. But Gorki Gorod, which is located just on the way to Rosa Khutor, is not yet known to all beach lovers. Although this place is certainly not interesting for lovers of beaches and sand. Gorki City is a ski resort.
Gorki Gorod is located in the most beautiful and protected places in the Krasnaya Polyana area. Modern hotels and apartments, spa centers, and restaurants have been built here. A developed infrastructure has been created for sports and comfortable recreation.
This is not just a ski resort. You can come here not only in the winter season. Relaxing and having fun in Gorki Gorod, as well as in Rosa Khutor, is possible all year round. And skiing can be a pleasant addition to the overall program, but not the main goal.
All-season and mountain Gorki Gorod resort
Today “Gorki Gorod” is an entire city with a full-fledged infrastructure, where hundreds of thousands of tourists from Russia and abroad vacation throughout the year. Therefore the full name sounds like all-season and mountain resort "Gorki Gorod".
Gorki City is located on four levels:
- +540m – “Lower City”,
- +960m – “Upper City”,
- +1500m and +2200m – cable cars, ski slopes, excursion sites and routes.
The highest point of the routes is the Black Pyramid peak of the Aibga ridge, mark + 2375m above sea level.
A road and cable car connect the “Lower” and “Upper” levels.
The resort can provide its services to about 10 thousand people at a time. The infrastructure of the resort is described in this article.
Accommodation
The resort has 11 of its own high-class hotels with a total capacity of more than 3,000 rooms and a single-occupancy capacity of 6.5 thousand people. There are also hotels of famous brands Rixos and Marriott here.
In the “Lower City” there are two hotels and the main apart-complexes, sports facilities, SPA complexes, a shopping gallery, a congress center, restaurants, playgrounds and an indoor water park. Places for entertainment are mainly concentrated in this part of the resort. 
The “Upper City” in appearance is very reminiscent of the resort settlements of the Mediterranean. Here you can stay in high-class apartments by choosing one of seven 7 hotels. At +960 m there is also a huge SPA center (9000 square meters). This part of the resort is visited by those who prefer comfort, peace and privacy on vacation. 
Project history
The resort in this place began to be created even before the Olympics. This was a project of the administration of the Krasnodar region and a group of private investors. It was planned to build a ski complex, which is called “Mountain Carousel”.
When it became known that the 2014 Olympics would be held in Sochi, the company managing the complex decided to take on an important mission - the construction of a media village at the resort. This village still exists today. It was here that media representatives lived and worked, telling the whole world about competitions such as skiing, bobsleigh, biathlon, freestyle or ski jumping. The tallest, safest and most expensive ski jump in the world was built here. 
It was in Gorki Gorod that the center of sports and cultural life of the mountain cluster of the 2014 Winter Olympics was located. And this is no coincidence. The development of the sports and tourist complex “Mountain Carousel” had already begun at that time. It is still the largest ski resort in Krasnaya Polyana. Only here the territory made it possible to build an entire city and provide accommodation for Olympic participants.
Ours didn’t skimp on design either. The French architect Pierre Diener, who became famous for designing the ski facilities of Courchevel, was invited as a consultant.
Mountain Carousel
Those who love snow, skiing and mountains are attracted here, first of all, by the “Mountain Carousel”. Do not confuse Mountain Carousel and Gorki Gorod. It's not the same thing. Gorki Gorod is a resort as a whole, and on its territory there is a complex Mountain Carousel(in a village called Esto-Sadok on the mountain slopes). 
Mountain Carousel offers 27 kilometers of ski slopes, which, according to snowboarding and skiing enthusiasts, are in no way inferior to European slopes. The trails are located between altitudes from 960 to 1460 meters. Varying in difficulty: " red" And " black», « green" And " blue" That is, there are options for skiing for both experienced and beginner skiers.
Lighted trails have recently opened for evening skiing. The number of snow cannons that I saw on the slopes in Rosa Khutor and here is amazing. I don't know if they all work, but they do. With their help, they solve the problem that Sochi is the southern and coastal part of Russia, and there is actually a problem with snow here. The resort has the longest skiing season - from December to May.
12 chairlifts and gondola lifts deliver skiers to the mountain slopes. The ascent on each section of the cable car takes up to 15 minutes on average. The transfer sites are located at an altitude of 960 m, 1459 m and 2200 m. And to get from the launch site (altitude 540 meters) to the farthest point “Circus-3” will take a little more than an hour.
Well, like any resort, ski equipment rental works. There are instructors and master classes for beginners.
Ski pass
The cost of tickets depends on their type (excursion or sports ski passes). There are gradations for students, children, beneficiaries, and also depending on the zone and time of action.
Free ticket provided to children under 6 years of age, disabled children, disabled people of the 1st group, WWII veterans and persons over 75 years of age.
On peak days (from December 26 to January 10): an adult sports day ski pass costs 2300 rubles, a child (from 6 to 16 years old) - 1600 rubles, in high season (January 11 - March 31): an adult - 1800 rubles, for children – 1200 rubles.

Gorki City Mall
But enough about skiing. Let's go for a ride, and where to spend time in the evening or in the summer. Both adults and adults with children can have fun at the Gorki City Mall shopping and entertainment center. There are more than 100 attractions for children. For adults, shopping areas, nightclub, bowling, air hockey, digital cinema. There are places to have a tasty snack. 
The highlight of the Gorka City Mall is, of course, the Mountain Beach water park located on the roof. 
This beach has natural sand, which is even heated in winter. The water park is covered with a transparent roof that allows the sun's rays to pass through. There is a lot of sun here due to the fact that Gorki City is located in the mountains. The water park has a swimming pool with imitation of ocean waves, seven water slides of varying heights and difficulties, a large pool with heated water, a jacuzzi, and a shallow children's pool.
So you can have fun and relax in the Gorki City Mall water park all year round.
Summer holidays at the Gorki Gorod resort
You won’t be able to go skiing in the summer season, but Gorki Gorod still provides plenty of options for active recreation in the mountains. Having relaxed enough on the beaches in the Imereti Lowland (Adler), you can devote a day, or maybe more, to the mountains.
For the strong and resilient, you can go to conquer the Rope Park, walk or horseback ride along eco-trails, visit relict forests, the Medvezhiy waterfall and other protected areas of nature. You can do yoga in the mountains, go mountain biking down the highway at the Bike Park.

How to get there?
All resorts in the Krasnaya Polyana area are unique in that they are located a short distance from the sea. The Black Sea coast is located just 40 kilometers from the peaks of the Caucasus ridge.
From Adler you can get to this mountain resort in just half an hour by arriving at the Esto-Sadok station on the Lastochka high-speed train. There is a free bus from the final stop that takes guests to the ski lift. Its route is drawn up taking into account the arrival time of the train. 
You can get from the airport to Gorki Gorod by a free shuttle that runs along the route: Gorki Gorod - Airport.
From Adler - by buses 105 and 135, or by transfer with excursion.
We visited from April 11 to April 17, and for the first time in Krasnaya Polyana. Although it’s not the season, there are a lot of people. We checked in late in the evening, there was a queue, but not critical - we waited for about 30 minutes. Although, of course, it was annoying to stand with children, we could have come up with something. Half of the reception did not work right away, while some of the remaining counters were simply closed - our working day was over, and the queue was growing. We found our building, apartment, and settled in. I was immediately impressed. Nice, spacious, clean room with two bedrooms and a large living room. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, which is quite large and comfortable. The beds in each bedroom turned out to be single beds pushed together. It’s okay for the kids, but it’s not convenient for my wife and I. It’s not realistic to figure it out - you’ll waste time, but you won’t achieve your goal. Everyone is relaxed all the time, but at the same time polite - such Rastafarian management. They say our occupancy rate is almost 100%, we can’t offer anything, so what are you saying? Well, be patient! and smile. When we checked in, in the huge building in which the reception is located, the fire alarm was blaring loudly with calls to leave the hotel. Of course, we all looked at each other, and those around us, including security, hotel staff and residents did not even notice this sound. In general, there was a feeling that only our group of visitors heard it. Then everything calmed down and it was as if nothing had happened. Well, who will defeat this country?)) Then, during the week of our stay, this happened a couple more times in the neighboring buildings, and, as before, no one paid attention to it. The room has a kitchen, which really makes life easier. Microwave with grill, but not working, we contacted them, listened politely, but no one came. The dishes were the most necessary, but the sets were not complete, but it was enough for us. The TV in the room is super - HD picture quality, there are many channels, both sports and movies. And the coolest thing is that there are web cameras from the streets around and from the ski slopes of the city’s hills. You can see the weather, the amount of snow, fog on the highway, rain on the street. They promised to clean every third day of stay - no one ever came. But they smiled. Rastafarians...In short, we cleaned up ourselves and generally tried not to litter. The kitchen has a built-in dishwasher, which makes life incredibly easier not only at home, but now also on vacation. There is no washing machine. Now it’s outside. There is a children's playground in the courtyard, the children liked it, then they found a cool playground behind the building, which was covered, that is, the children can play there in the rain if they get tired of sitting in the room and going to the water parks. The yard, like everything around, is beautiful, spacious, clean. In general, living in Gorki-city is pleasant and convenient: grocery stores and more are nearby, a pharmacy too, ATMs, everything is at hand, bank cards are accepted everywhere. The ski lift is nearby, rentals are nearby, cafes and restaurants - everything is here. I wanted to go skiing at Rosa Khutor - I took a bus and went there for 23 rubles.

The price of tickets for the “Gorki Tour” and “Day in the Mountains” tariffs includes a visit to the “Circus-2” climatic zone (cable cars K-4 and K-5), which is free and depends on weather conditions. If it is impossible to visit this area, the cost of tickets will not be refunded.
Rope park services, included in the tariffs, are provided to the guest at the point of service provision upon presentation of a walking ticket with the name of the tariff.
In case of closure of the K-2 and/or K-3 cable car due to weather conditions and the impossibility of using tariffs for individuals, resort guests may be offered tariffs for wholesale buyers
Season ski passes winter 2019/2020 with a 30% discount
The seasonal personalized ski pass is valid from the beginning of the 2019-2020 winter ski season until 05/31/2020 inclusive for an unlimited number of lifts.

Activation of tickets and photographing of the ticket holder occurs at the moment of the first passage through the turnstile.
Ropeways (characteristics, operating mode)
They work at our resort 13 lifts, of which 4 are gondola, 7 are chair and 2 are rope tow. The total capacity of all cable cars is 2,400 people per hour.
For your convenience, our resort is divided into Central and Eastern sectors. The main lift is three stages in the Central sector of the Main Cable Car with 8-seater gondolas (K-1, K-2 and K-3), which lift to an altitude of +2200 meters above sea level.
Three more chairlifts (K-4, K-5 and K-6) operate in the Circus-2 and Circus-3 ski areas. Circus-2 is located at an altitude of about +2000 m under the Black Pyramid mountain (2375 m is the highest point in the resort). Circus 3 is right behind it. There is also a chairlift (K-8) from the Upper Town station at +960 m, which takes you to a height of 1130 m.
You can get to the Eastern sector from the Upper City station at +960 m on K-10.
Observation platforms are located at altitudes: +960 m, +1460 m, +2200 m.
Ropeway operating schedule 01.06 - 30.09.2019
On Mondays (2nd and 4th week of each month) from 8:30 to 10:00 the cable cars are closed for routine maintenance (except for holidays). * On July 8, routine maintenance on the K-3 and K-4 cable cars will be extended until 12:00.

Ski slopes of the resort
general characteristics
Our resort has ski slopes of varying difficulty levels total length about 30 km from an altitude of +2340 m to +960 m.
Illuminated routes with a total length of about 3 km, evening skiing from +1460 m to +960 m.
Trails with artificial snow with a total length of 4.9 km from +1500 m to +960 m, 64 snow cannons.
Difficulty level: 11 blue, 2 green, 14 red, 5 black. 4 freeride zones.
Ski season: from December to May.
The third stage of the Main Cable Car, which starts from the top of +2200 m, is suitable for confident skiers and snowboarders; the second stage (+1460 m) has trails of medium difficulty and an excellent training track for beginners.
Under Circus 2 there is a ramp to the Eastern Sector ski area. In the upper part of the Eastern sector there are difficult red tracks, in the lower part there are green and blue tracks that are convenient for training.

Evening skiing in winter
From 1460 m to 960 m.
For evening skiing, the following tracks are available: “blue” 2B and 8E, “green” (8A), which are equipped with an artificial snowmaking and lighting system, which makes evening skiing enjoyable and safe.
During the evening skiing period, you can also use the drag ropeway (K-9) with a length of about 300 m, which is most suitable for beginners.
Black tracks
The climate of Krasnaya Polyana is ideal for lovers of powder: soft, without severe frosts, and at the same time with heavy, prolonged snowfalls. Their peak, as a rule, occurs at the end of January - beginning of February.
This year the resort has allocated four freeride zones: two in the Central and two in the Eastern sector of the resort. All of them are located above 1000 meters above sea level, where the softest and fluffiest snow is. These sections are very difficult and unpredictable and can only be ridden with special training.
Attention!
We do not recommend trying your hand at black trails and freeride areas for those who have recently started riding. You risk not being able to cope with a difficult area, which can be fraught with various injuries. There are many dangers here that we never tire of warning our guests about.
Most routes end in drops and rocks, so before you set off on them, you need to know the exits that you can use. For this purpose, novice riders need to contact professional off-piste instructors, who are offered by the resort's accredited instructor schools. Their services cost from 3,000 to 5,000 rubles per person per day, including training and equipment.
We remind you that under no circumstances should you drive in an unknown direction following someone’s trail. This mark on the descent could have been left by a resort employee who knows the area well and is much better prepared than you.
If you want to be the first to ski on fresh snow immediately after a snowfall, then choose a hotel in the Upper Town. You can climb to the beginning of the descent directly from the hotel - just like returning from the mountain - right to the doorstep. The lifts start operating at 9:00, so you can start your descent as early as 9:15-9:20.
To climb the eco-routes, you must purchase a walking ticket for the cable car to the corresponding mark at the resort ticket office.

The main cable car consists of five lines (K-1, K-2, K-3, K-4, K-5). The main part of the route (K-1, K-2, K-3) is carried out in closed gondola-type cabins, the last stage is open. Before you buy tickets for the cable car, you need to ask at the box office how many queues are open today, or you can check this information on the official website: operating hours of the cable cars. Also, do not forget that you can purchase tickets at a discount (at a reduced price) for pensioners and children; also check this information when purchasing, in case you decide to prepare in advance for a meeting of friends with children or parents.
From the end of October until the start of the ski season, the last stage (climbing the Black Pyramid mountain - K-4, K-5) is closed. But this does not mean at all that you need to change your plans. Look at the view of the mountain from the neighboring peak:

The total time to climb to the top is about an hour.
Elevation gain from the landing site to the top is 2200m (3rd stage) - 1642m.
The length of the cable car to the top is 2200m - 4623 meters.
At each “transfer stop” there are observation platforms where you can spend an unlimited amount of time. The main thing is to look in advance at what time the last cable car goes down.
